Sowing Advice

Sow Kelvedon Wonder pea seeds in early spring when the soil is workable, typically around March or April. Plant seeds 2.5 cm deep, spacing them 5 cm apart, in rows 30-40 cm apart. If the weather is still cold, protect your seedlings with a fleece to ensure a good start. In colder climates, peas can be sowed directly outdoors, but in milder regions, you may start them indoors for a head start and transplant them after the risk of frost has passed.

Care

Kelvedon Wonder peas thrive in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of sunlight. They prefer a slightly alkaline pH, so it’s worth testing your soil before planting. Water consistently, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. Support your plants with a small trellis or pea netting to encourage vertical growth and keep the pods off the ground. Regularly check for pests, particularly aphids, and remove any weeds that may compete for nutrients.

Top Tips

  • Sow in Succession – For a continuous harvest, plant seeds every 2-3 weeks from early spring to mid-summer.

  • Pre-Soak Seeds – If the soil is dry, soaking the seeds in water for 4-6 hours before planting can speed up germination.

  • Provide Support – Peas benefit from pea netting or small stakes to keep pods off the ground.

  • Water Consistently – Keep soil evenly moist, especially when flowers appear, to ensure plump and sweet peas.

  • Mulch for Moisture – Adding a layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Pick Regularly – Harvest frequently to encourage more pod production and prevent peas from becoming starchy.

  • Use Companion Planting – Grow alongside carrots, radishes, or lettuce to maximise space and deter pests naturally.

  • Save Some Seeds – Allow a few pods to fully dry on the plant for seed-saving and next year’s planting.

Pests & Problems

Like most peas, Kelvedon Wonder peas are susceptible to pests such as aphids, pea weevils, and slugs. Aphids can be controlled by introducing natural predators like ladybugs or using an organic insecticidal soap. Keep an eye out for mold and mildew, especially in damp conditions. Rotating your pea crop each year can help prevent soil-borne diseases, and ensuring good air circulation can reduce the likelihood of fungal infections.

uksn-storage.png

Seed Storage

Proper seed storage is essential to maintain the viability of peas for future planting. Peas, like most seeds, are sensitive to moisture and temperature, so taking the right steps can extend their lifespan significantly.

Reducing Moisture Levels

To prevent mold and premature germination, ensure the seeds are fully dried before storage. If harvesting your own seeds:

• Spread them out in a warm, dry place with good airflow for at least 2-3 weeks.

• Use a silica gel packet or rice in storage containers to help absorb excess moisture.

• Seeds should have a moisture content below 10% for long-term storage.

Short-Term Storage (Up to 1 Year)

For short-term storage (one growing season), peas should be kept in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Options include:

• Paper envelopes or breathable cloth bags stored in a sealed plastic or metal container.

• A cupboard, pantry, or other indoor space with stable temperatures (below 15°C).

Long-Term Storage (1-5 Years or More)

For longer-term storage, peas require cold and dry conditions:

• Airtight containers such as glass jars, vacuum-sealed bags, or Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers help extend viability.

• Refrigeration (4-5°C) can extend shelf life, but avoid moisture buildup by using a desiccant.

• Freezing is possible, but seeds must be fully dried first. If freezing, store in airtight containers and allow them to come to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.

Checking Viability

Before planting stored seeds, do a germination test by placing a few seeds in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag. If fewer than 70-80% germinate, consider planting more than usual or replacing the seed stock.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your pea seeds remain viable for multiple growing seasons.
