As you may know, UKSN currently operates a membership system where each paid member is allocated a unique membership number. However, over time, this system has become increasingly inaccurate and filled with inactive entries.
To address these issues and ensure the system is both accurate and scalable, we are proposing an updated membership numbering system. This new system is designed to rectify current inconsistencies and future-proof our membership records as UKSN continues to grow.
Overview of the Proposed System
The new numbering format would:
1. Start from UKSN000 for paid members and [Charter Initials]0 for Charter members.
2. Use hierarchy layers to identify members who are part of both UKSN and a specific Charter.
For example:
• General member number: UKSN000
• Charter member number: UKSN000/MD0 (for someone in the MudDogs Charter).
Format Details
General Membership Numbers:
• All paid members would be assigned a unique ID starting from UKSN000.
• The number would increment sequentially as new members join (e.g., UKSN001, UKSN002).
Charter Membership Numbers:
• Charter numbers would be issued and maintained at the Charter level.
• Members in Charters would have 'numbers' based on the Charter’s initials. For example:
• MudDogs: MD0, MD1, MD2, etc.
• The first member of a Charter ([Charter Initials]0) would always be the primary Charter leader.
Combined Format for Members in Charters:
• Members who are part of both UKSN and a Charter would have combined numbers, separated by a slash. For example:
• UKSN003/MD1: Paid member UKSN003 who is also the second member of the MudDogs Charter.
Why Are We Proposing This Change?
The proposed system addresses gaps caused by old membership numbers that are no longer in use. It aims to:
• Simplify the numbering process.
• Ensure a logical sequence for both UKSN and Charter numbers.
• Better manage memberships as we continue to grow.
What This Would Mean for You
Paid Members:
• You would be issued a new membership number in the UKSN### format.
Charter Members:
• If you are part of a Charter, you would receive a Charter number/id issued and maintained at the Charter level (e.g., MD1 for the second member of the MudDogs Charter, as the primary Charter leader is always MD0).
• Your full identifier would combine your membership number and Charter number (e.g., UKSN005/MD1 for the second member of the Charter).
• Members not in a Charter would only have their membership number.
Transition Period:
• Your current membership number would remain valid temporarily during the transition. You would receive your new number by email or through your membership account.
Your Input Matters
We believe it’s important for all members to have a say in this decision. To ensure fairness, we have created a poll below allowing members to vote on whether to implement this new system. Voting will remain open until the end of January.
Should UKSN Introduce a New Membership Numbering System?
Yes, I support the changes
No, I prefer the current system
I'm undecided and need more information
This is your opportunity to share your thoughts and help shape the future of UKSN.
Examples of the Proposed System
• A new UKSN member: UKSN010
• The primary Charter leader of MudDogs: UKSN056/MD0
• A Charter member in MudDogs: UKSN010/MD2
• A member not in a Charter: UKSN011
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What happens to my old ID?
Your old ID would no longer be in use once the new system is fully implemented. You would retain the same member status with your new ID.
Can I choose my number?
Numbers would be assigned sequentially to ensure fairness and consistency.
What if I join a Charter later?
Your number would be updated to include the Charter ID. For example, if you are currently UKSN020 and join the MudDogs, your number would become UKSN020/MD10.
What does it mean to be the primary Charter leader?
The primary Charter leader ([Charter Initials]0) is the first member of the Charter and is responsible for overseeing its operations. This role is automatically assigned to the first member of any new charter.
Does this affect my membership benefits?
No, your benefits and status would remain unchanged.
